Koperasi BKSS aims for regional excellence
A COOPERATIVE established under the Ministry of Health (MoH) aims to become one of the best cooperative bodies in the Asean region and seeks to diversify its business ventures and work with similar foreign bodies this year.
The outlook for the new year is generally positive for the Ministry of Health's Sports and Social Welfare Cooperative or Koperasi Badan Kebajikan Sukan Dan Sosial (Koperasi BKSS) as the cooperative is looking towards diversification and new business ventures.
In an interview with The Brunei Times, the chairman of the cooperative body Hj Md Salleh Hj Mohiddin said on Monday that that the cooperative has come up with several strategies to increase its business performance in line with its vision 'to be a cooperative body of excellence in the Asean region'.
"We are expanding our horizons this time. In today's fast-paced world, we have to be more competitive to sustain, so our goal is to diversify in a vast array of businesses, and one of the ways to do this is through more cooperation with foreign cooperatives," he said.
In light of this new direction, the director said BKSS has updated several of its regulations and is in the process of officially changing its name and abbreviation to "Koperasi Berkat Kerja Keras Semua Senang".
Formed in 1996, BKSS has since flourished into a thriving business with more than $1 million in assets and 1,406 shareholders. It runs a cake shop, grocery store, a restaurant, and a canteen. Adding to its impressive list of businesses, the cooperative has proposed new business projects to be implemented this year, including a new business venture in agriculture as well as in transportation services.
"This is what we want to realise this year because it is in line with our objective to support the government's efforts in raising Brunei's self-sufficiency rate in agriculture," he said.
Furthermore, the director said, the cooperative has recently signed MoUs in Vietnam and Indonesia to deploy foreign workers for its agricultural operation in Brunei.
"Another planned project which have long been overdue and hoped to be realised this year is in the transportation services, both on land and sea. We are now looking at purchasing a number of buses (to start off) this venture," he added.
Apart from the cooperative body's latest acquisition of a shop at the Madang Complex in Berakas which will house a modern restaurant that offers catering services, he also unveiled the coop's asset investment plans. "This year, we are also looking at buying several apartments. This has been our objective as a cooperative body, to enhance and boost our number of assets, such as land and buildings," he said.
Last year, BKSS launched the Skim Pinjaman Khas (SPK), a special loan scheme which its members can apply for. The loan, however, is proportional to the number of shares a member has in the cooperative and can be used for purposes such as spending for celebrations, buying equipment and school supplies as well as other necessities.
"This year, we are going to introduce a new monthly payment scheme for our members which will benefit individual members, where instead of paying comprehensively, through this scheme, those who invest a lot will benefit more. At this moment we are still in the process of implementing this scheme," he said.
Asked about the challenges of managing a cooperative, the director said, "The commitment and sustained performance from the board of directors play a crucial role in a cooperative's success."
